Sven Andersson is Manager for Research and Development at Götaverken Miljö, Göteborg, Sweden (previously known as Babcock & Wilcox Volund AB), where he has been active since 1998 when he earned his PhD. In Chemical Engineering Design at Chalmers University of Technology. Sven Andersson also holds a position as an Adjunct Professor in Environmental Technology at this university.

Giuseppe BONIFAZI

Giuseppe Bonifazi Full Professor of Raw Material Engineering at La Sapienza – University of Rome (Italy) in the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering (Department of Chemical Material and Environmental Engineering) since 1983. For about 45 years he studied particles and particulates solids characterization of different origin and characteristics, developing and implementing mechanical strategies and multi- and hyper-spectral sensing technologies addressed to their compositional, morphological and morphometrical characterization. He has been and is member of several international scientific associations. He joined, as Principal Investigator or project partner, to several national, European (Erasmus + Capacity Building, Life, Collaborative, Craft, Growth) and International Projects focused of particulates solid materials characterization and processing. He has co-authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications in international journals.

Christina DORNACK

Christina Dornackis Director of the Institute and holds the Chair of Waste Management and Circular Economy at TU Dresden. Her former stations were: Head of the Competence Centre Recycling and Raw Materials at PTS for fibre based solution  with responsibilities for scientific and industrial research and projects in the fields of paper for Recycling and cascaded use of biomass, associated professor for waste and bio energy management at TU Cottbus (2010-2013) with the special focus on biogas production from waste and renewable raw materials, material flow analysis of processes in the circular economy. Since 2020 she is member of the German Advisory Council on the Environment.

Kerstin KUCHTA

Kerstin Kuchta is director of the research Institute of Circular Resources Engineering and Management” and full professor at the Hamburg University of Technology since 2010. She received her Diploma in Environmental Engineering at the Berlin University of Technology and started her carrier as a researcher at Darmstadt University of Technology. Her PhD was in the field of recovery and utilisation of incineration bottom ashes. From 2002-2010 she was Full Professor for Energy and Environmental Management at Hamburg University of Applied Science and founding dean of the faculty of engineering at the German-Kazak University (DKU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. In 2011 she moved to Hamburg University of Technology to establish the new research field of waste resources. Her major research interests are the Circular Economy of Polymers, Rare Earth Elements and Critical Metals and the BioEconomy in Circular Cities.

Nicolas KALOGERAKIS

Nicolas Kalogerakis is Professor Emeritus of Biochemical Engineering at the Technical University of Crete where he served twice as Department Head and as Vice-President of the University Council. Prior to that he was a Professor at SUNY-Buffalo (USA) and at the University of Calgary (Canada). In 1997 he returned to Greece as a founding member of the Environmental Engineering Dept. He holds a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from NTUA (Athens, Greece), an MEng(A) from McGill University (Montreal, Canada) and a PhD from the University of Toronto (Canada). His area of expertise includes environmental biotechnology focusing on bioremediation and phytoremediation technologies. Currently his group is participating in 3 EU funded research projects. Professor Kalogerakis has a strong publication record with >20000 citations and an h-index of 77 (Google scholar).

Grzegorz LISAK

Dr. Grzegorz Lisak joined NTU Singapore in 2016 as Assistant Professor and was tenured in 2022 to Associate Professor. Since 2017, he is a director of Residues and Resources Reclamation Center (in 2022 converted to Resource Recovery Programme) and since 2024 he is Deputy Executive Director at Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute. Since 2019, he is the associated editor of Chemosphere (IF= 8.1), Elsevier. Since 2024, he is co-Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Research, (IF= 7.7), Elsevier. Since 2021, he is a member of the Technical Committee for Circularity of Materials under the purview of Environment and Resources Standards Committee, Enterprise Singapore. Since 2022, he is a member of the External Advisory Panel for Environmental Sustainability (EPES), Ministry of Defence (MINDEF/SAF). His interests cover sustainability, hazardous waste management, plastic waste conversion, waste to energy, waste to resources, and CO2 capture and utilization.

Arne RAGOSSNIG

Arne Ragossnig is managing partner of the Austrian Consultancy RM Umweltkonsulenten ZT GmbH. His main fields of experience among others encompass recycling processes and selective demolition of buildings. Pre-demolition audits as they are mandatory in Austria are a core expertise and the foundation of research activities in the context of establishing material cadastres of buildings to evaluate the potential for recycling and reuse. He is Honorary Professor at Hochschule Burgenland and covers topics of general waste management, recycling and material loops as well as landfill technology as a lecturer at Hochschule Burgenland, University of Leoben and the Danube University in Krems. In September he has been re-elected as Vice President of ISWA (International Solid Waste Association) as well as re-elected as President of ISWA Austria. Arne Ragossnig is editor-in-chief of ISWA´s scientific journal Waste Management & Research as well as member of the scientific boards of various topic related international conferences.

Andreas BARTL

Dr. Andreas Bartl is a senior scientist at TU Vienna at the Institute of Chemical, Environmental and Bioscience Engineering. In 2012 he received the Conferment of the right to lecture (“venia docendi”) and the academic title “Privatdozent”. He completed his education as a technical chemist at the TU Wien. After completing his doctorate, he worked for several years in industry in the areas of research & development and production. Since 2002 he is engaged in recycling fibers derived from end-of-life products such as apparel or tires. Currently Andreas is involved in national and H2020 research projects aiming to move the textile industry toward a circular economy. The main focus of the research lies in the area of enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulosic fibers in particular for an upscaling and the removal of elastane from textile blends.

Friendrich WENINGER

Friedrich Weninger was the organizer of the world-famous annual Dornbirn GFC Global Fiber Congress until end of 2023. Close to the industry, he has several supervisory functions in the textile and fiber industry as well as in service industry. Before that, Friedrich successfully headed various management functions in the Lenzing Group – the world market leader in cellulose fibers with an annual turnover of 2.2 bio € – for 25 years. As COO (Chief Operating Officer) of the Lenzing Group, he was responsible for marketing & sales, production, innovation and investments for Lenzings core business of pulp and fibers, but also back then for plastic films and synthetic fibers. Friedrich is strongly and passionately committed to sustainable innovation in a broader context, not just to gain a competitive advantage, but also as a responsibility to the planet and our future generations.

Seung-Whee RHEE

Prof. Seung-Whee RHEE received his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemical Engineering in Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1991. He is President of the Korea Basel Forum, approved by Ministry of Environment of Korea, since 2012 and National Expert of Korea in Minamata Convention and Basel Convention since 2019. In 1994 he became a Professor at the Department of Environmental Engineering at Kyonggi University in Korea and in 2023 an Emeritus Professor at the same institution.  He is former Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering in Kyonggi University (2022-2023), former Editor in Chief at the Journal of Material Cycles and Waste Management (Springer | 2020-2021) , as well as Former President of the Korea Society of Waste Management (2018-2019).

Roald KOMMEDAL

Roald Kommedal is Associate Professor in Environmental Engineering at University of Stavanger, Norway. He studied environmental and aquaculture engineering and earned a Ph.D. in environmental biotechnology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2003. Following post doc studies on biodegradation of hydrocarbons at psychrophilic marine conditions, and marine synthetic polymer degradation, his research focused on anaerobic wastewater and sludge treatment technologies. The research profile includes applied and industrial scale applications, as well as more fundamental work within bioprocess modelling and fundamental experimental studies on bio-aggregate systems. His research has been disseminated by an excess of 70 articles and conference contributions. Prof. Kommedal has held various research administrative positions and academic duties, including research group leader and program tutor for the Environmental Engineering program at UiS

Apostolos VOULGARAKIS

Apostolos Voulgarakis is Professor at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the Technical University of Crete (TUC), where he also holds the AXA Chair for Wildfires and Climate. He is the Director of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Climate Change at TUC, and also the Founder/Founding Director and current Associate Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Wildfires, Environment and Society, based in London, with TUC an official Affiliated Organization of the Centre. He holds a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry from the University of Cambridge (UK), and pursued his undergraduate and masters studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Technical University of Crete, respectively. He has also held positions at Imperial College London (UK), NASA, and Columbia University (USA), and has had crucial roles in international atmospheric chemistry and climate model intercomparison efforts contributing to IPCC reports. His research focuses on topics related to global and regional climate change, air pollution, and wildfires, with around 100 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and ~15,000 citations of his work so far.

Dimitris KALDERIS

Associate Professor Dimitrios Kalderis obtained his B.Sc. in Chemistry (1997) and Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry (2001) from the University of Leeds, UK. After working for one year at the Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) in the United States, he became a research associate at the Technical University of Crete (Greece) working in EU and nationally-funded projects, preparing, characterizing and applying activated carbons from biomasses to wastewater treatment. Since 2010, he has been a permanent member of academic staff of the Hellenic Mediterranean University, teaching solid waste management courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. His research interests include the development of soil remediation methods, the production of biochars and hydrochars from residual biomass and their application in wastewater treatment. He has published 104 papers, has an h-index of 35 and has received >5500 citations of his work. He has been listed at the top 2% of scientists in the world according to the Stanford/Elsevier list, for the consecutive years 2021, 2022, 2023.

Symeon GEORGIADIS

Mr. Symeon Georgiadis is a graduate of the School of Chemistry of the Athens National University. He has a Master’s degree in Business Administration (Master of Business Adiminstration) from the University of South Carolina (U.S.A.) and the Technical School of Economy and Technology Pforzheim (Germany). His experience in the field of waste management and environmental protection commences in year 1999 and continues until today. He is currently working as Executive Director of POLYECO S.A. a waste management service provider with worldwide presence. During the course of his career Mr. Georgiadis has undertaken, as Project Director, the management of pioneering decontamination and restoration projects of old plants and industrial sites and he has coordinated the implementation of several innovative investments in the fields of environmental chemistry and technology. He is fluent in English and German. In October 2021 he was elected for the first time in the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Solid Waste Management Association (HSWMA).
